Morphological description

Annual herb, stems 20-180 mm tall, few to many tufted from the base, in small discrete groups crowded together, mostly simple, sometimes with 1 or 2 branches very low down, glandular-puberulous, nude or with a few greatly reduced leaves near base. Leaves all radical or very nearly so, opposite and decussate, bases connate, blade 6-40 x 2-15 mm, oblanceolate to elliptic tapering to a petiolar part 4-20 mm long (roughly half to almost equalling length of blade), margins entire to obscurely or more sharply but remotely denticulate, both surfaces glandular-puberulous. Flowers many in simple terminal racemes, crowded at first, distant in fruit. Bracts (lowermost) c. 14 x 0.2-0.75 mm, linear or linear-lanceolate, acute. Pedicels (lowermost) 3.5-14 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.3-1 mm long, anticous lobes 3.5-4.8 x 0.6-1.1 mm, anticous lip split 3-4.8 mm, posticous lobes 3.1-5 x 0.6-1 mm, posticous lip split 2.8-4.5 mm, lobes all narrowly oblong, tips somewhat spathulate, glandular-puberulous all over outside, hairs to 0.3-0.5 mm long. Corolla tube 7.5-10.5 x 1.2-2 mm in throat, cylindric, expanded in upper third, limb 10-14 mm in diam., nearly regular, lobes 3-5.5 x 2.5-6 mm, broadly ovate to subrotund, reflexed, white to mauve-blue (changing colour on one plant), white or yellow around mouth and in throat, tube densely puberulous all over outside, hairs c. 0.1-0.4 mm, both glandular and eglandular, ± sessile glistening glands on backs of lobes, inside a longitudinal posticous band of clavate hairs (often dark-coloured), throat otherwise almost glabrous. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.4-0.6 mm long, tips just visible in mouth, posticous anthers 1.1-2 mm long, included, posticous filaments bearded, hairs mostly dark. Stigma 5.4-7.5 mm long, shortly exserted or just included. Style 0.6-1.4 mm long. Ovary 1.4-2 x 0.6-1 mm. Capsules 4.5-7 x 3-4 mm. Seeds 0.5-0.6 x 0.3-0.4 mm, violet-blue (young?) or pallid. Diagnostic description

Manulea schaeferi has been much confused with M. nervosa, which it resembles in habit and in its almost regular corolla limb, but it is readily distinguished by the calyx, which is lobed almost to the base whereas in the markedly bilabiate calyx of M. nervosa the two lips are each lobed less than halfway. The flowers of M. schaeferi are mostly smaller too (e.g. anticous lip of calyx 3.5-4.8 mm long versus 4.6-8.5 mm, and corolla limb 10-14 mm in diameter versus 14-20 mm) and the calyx lobes are narrower in relation to their length. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]

Distribution

The area of M. schaeferi lies north and east of that of M. nervosa, from Aus and Keetmanshoop in southern Namibia south to Warmbaths and east across the Orange river to Kakamas, Upington, Kenhardt and Prieska in the Northern Cape.
