Diagnostic description

D. tragus is a perennial herb. The stems, which are simple or sparingly branched and lignified at the base, arise from a quite thick, subterranean, lignified caudex. On one and the same individual may be found both entire and sparsely sinuate-dentate leaves. The colour of the ray flowers varies from orange to brighter yellow. The corolla lobes of the inner disc flowers seem throughout to be cuculliform at the top. It has been pointed out above that the ray flowers lack styles. It happens in exceptional cases, however, that the sterile ray flowers are furnished with a style, and in that case this is either entire, or very slightly cleft at the apex. The achenes are suborbicular with a slight incurvation at the apex, or if they have a more emarginate apex they may be described as obcordate. From: Norlindh, NT. 1943. Studies in the Calenduleae: 1. Monograph of the genera Dimorphotheca, Castalis, Osteospermum, Gibbaria & Chrysanthemoides. C.W.K. Gleerup, Lund. [All rights reserved]
