Protea revoluta R.Br.
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Prostrate shrublet with horizontally sprawling subterranean stems; forming clumps or tufts up to 2 m in diam., 20 cm in height. Stems 5-15 mm in diam., glabrous, much branched, spreading horizontally; regeneration taking place from the subterranean branch system, after burning. Leaves linear 15-25 cm long, 2-3 mm wide, margins revolute, petiolar region terete, apices cuspidate; secund, close set, glaucous, flushed with pinkish carmine when young. Inflorescence globose in bud, opening to broadly crateriform, 4-6 cm in diam. Receptacle conic-acute, 1.5-2 cm wide, 1 cm high. Involucral bracts greenish yellow, occasionally flushed with carmine, 5-6 seriate; outer series ovate-acute, 5-8 mm wide, 7-10 mm long, thin textured and papyraceous, glabrous but margins ciliate; inner series oblong-spathulate, 3-3.5 cm long, apices concave and rounded, margins hyaline, occasionally ciliate. Perianth 2.5-3 cm long, adaxially curved; tube region 1 cm long inflated distally, prominently quadrangular, winged, glabrous, sharply constricted at junction with perianth claws; claws slender, hyaline, pubescent along inner margin; limbs 5 mm long, linear, apices sharply acute, villous to lanate. Style adaxially arcuate, 3 cm long, compressed vertically. Pollen presenter linear filiform, simple, 3-4 mm long, scarcely differentiated from style. Hypogynous scales oblong, 2 mm long obtuse. Ovary 2-3 mm long obconic, covered with long, straight tawny trichomes. Flowering commences in late November, with December the peak of the season. However, odd flower-heads continue to open well into January. From: Rourke, JP. 1980. The proteas of southern Africa. Purnell, Cape Town. [All rights reserved]

Like P. acaulos but leaves linear, margins revolute. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Proteaceae. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 657-681. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Habitat

Few proteas occupy such a harsh environment as P. revoluta. Intense heat coupled with five months of almost complete drought characterise the summers, while during winter when the meagre annual rainfall between 250 and 350 mm is expected, occasional snowfalls as well as light frosts occur. Most populations are located at elevations between 900 and 1 600 m in rough, mountainous terrain where the associated vegetation consists mainly of low, sparse Restionaceae. In the Swartruggens, this species is so abundant that it forms large, clearly discernible patches on the ground, covering several metres in extent. Elsewhere where the species is less abundant, such prostrate tufts are easily mistaken for clumps of Restionaceae but in early summer when new growth commences, the young leaves are flushed with carmine, making the plants more readily visible. Dry sandstone slopes. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Proteaceae. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 657-681. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Distribution

From the southern Cedarberg, P. revoluta is distributed throughout the central Cold Bokkeveld, as far south as the Witzenberg. However, it is most abundant along the eastern escarpment of the Cold Bokkeveld where the sandstones and quartzites of the Cape Folded System lie adjacent to the rocks of the Karoo System, as the Swartruggens, Hex River and Touws River mountains. There are also populations along the crest of the Witteberg, near Matjiesfontein, this being the most easterly point of the species' range. From: Rourke, JP. 1980. The proteas of southern Africa.
