Morphological description

Resprouting shrub, 80-150 cm high. Branches acrocaulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches glabrescent. Leaves herbaceous, becoming acroramous, transversely applanate, longitudinally straight, dead basal leaves not persistent, (18-)30-70(-110) x (10-)14-20(-30) mm, oblanceolate to obovate, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, indumentum appressed, hairs similar in length, trichomes simple or pustular; leaf margin entire; apex acute to obtuse; mid-vein abaxially prominent. Inflorescence of many flowered, compound cincinni, young flowering axis compact, flower buds loosely arranged to form a globose unit, spreading slightly in fruiting stage. Bracts (16-)20-30(-33) x (5-)6-8(-10) mm, mostly lanceolate. Flowers medium sized (anterior petals 17-30 mm long), more than three per cymule, slightly obliquely zygomorphic, tubular. Sepals lanceolate, in adult flowers usually more than half of corolla length, dissimilar in width, free, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, non-velutinous; young apices incurved to applanate, brown trichomes on the adaxial surface present. Petals similar, posterior and anterior petals ca. 15-16 mm long, posterior and anterior petal lobes ca. 3 mm long, predominantly violet-blue; abaxially hairy, hairs evenly spread. Stamens similar in length, exserted in adult flowers; anthers dorsifixed; filaments shortly adnate (<5 mm) above staminal scales. Staminal scales inserted well below the throat of the corolla tube, 1 mm above the base of the corolla tube, reduced to ridges, rounded, lateral lobes wanting, villous, area between scales also hairy. Gynoecium 2-carpelled; ovary superior, 4-locular (via false septa); nectariferous disc present, longitudinally convex, transversely annular; Style median sections hairy. Mericarpids ovoid-trigonous; tuberculate; hairs absent; lateral ridges inconspicuous; dorsal side acute; dorsal keel prominent; ventral keel prominent. From: Buys, MH. 2011. Habitat

It is limited to Table Mountain Sandstone soils and plants almost always grow in disturbed areas, either along road verges or on scree slopes. From: Buys, MH. 2011. Revision of Lobostemon (Boraginaceae). Phytotaxa 37: 1-131. [http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/phytotaxa.37.1.1] [All rights reserved]

Distribution

Lobostemon montanus is currently most abundant in localities around False Bay, from Betties Bay to Cape Point, and there are historical collections from Hermanus. Collections are also known from the Atlantic seaboard on the Cape Peninsula, as well as the northern lower slopes of Table Mountain, the latter where the type specimens for the names L. montanus and L. sprengelianus derive from.
