PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / ASPARAGALES / IRIDACEAE / IRIDOIDEAE / IRIDEAE / MORAEA / HOMERIA / OCHROLEUCA
Plants medium to large, 350-750 mm high. Corm 15-25 mm diam.; tunics of coarse, black fibres. Stem 1- to several-branched from upper or all nodes, with attenuate sheathing leaves at upper nodes, 60-70 mm long. Foliage leaves usually solitary, sometimes 2(3), lowermost inserted above ground (sometimes up to 150 mm), channelled, exceeding stem, often trailing above, 6-15 mm wide, remaining leaves if present shorter. Rhipidial spathes attenuate, inner (50-)60-80 mm long, outer ± 1/2 as long. Flowers long-lived, yellow entirely, or with orange floral cup, rarely orange entirely, strongly scented, tepal claws forming a wide cup and secreting nectar from veins on surface, limbs spreading; outer tepals obovate, 30-40 x 15-17 mm, claws 13-16 mm long, inner tepals similar, slightly smaller. Filaments united in a slender column 7-10 mm long, tapering from base to apex; anthers 4.5-8.0 mm long, ± straight, narrowly diverging, yellow; pollen yellow. Ovary cylindric, 13-16 mm long; style branches 5.0-6.5 mm long, slightly narrower than anthers, stigma bilobed, crests lacking. Capsules cylindric, 20-40 mm long, with short beak ± 1 mm long. Seeds angular. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Cormous geophyte, 35-75 cm. Leaf solitary, occasionally 2, linear, channelled. Flowers yellow to orange or bicoloured, tepal claws forming a wide cup, filament column slender, anthers partly exserted. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Iridaceae. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 119-176. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
The large yellow or yellow and orange flowers of Moraea ochroleuca are distinctive in their wide cup formed by the tepal claws and spreading tepal limbs. The species is unusual in having nectar secreted from veins over the claw surface rather than from discrete nectaries at the tepal bases as in most other Moraea species. The style branches, relatively well developed and up to 6.5 mm long but only ± as wide as the anthers that are appressed to them, terminate in bilobed stigma lobes but lack discrete crests. The tall plants, up to 750 mm high, typically have a solitary foliage leaf but plants with two, or even three foliage leaves are known, these mostly from higher elevations. Flowers of M. ochroleuca last three days, opening in the morning on the first day and fading gradually during the third day. The flowers have a strong, rather sickly sweet, slightly fermenting odour. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Rocky sandstone ground, flowering particularly well after fire but erratically in unburned sites. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
