Flowers in a pedunculate thyrse, star-shaped, white to yellowish green, petals 2.0-4.5 mm long. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P; Bruyns, PV. 2012. Crassulaceae. C. saxifraga, has a similarly wide, scattered distribution, but C. umbella is distinguished by its leaves which are borne well above the soil and are well developed when the plant flowers. Its inflorescence is a thyrse with star-shaped flowers.C. umbella is a very variable species with several local forms: 1. In the Kamiesberg and in localities to the north plants have more or less fused leaves often forming an entire, circular collar around the stem. 2. The leaves of plants from the Gifberg and Cedarberg tend to be somewhat fused and to have a crenate or double-crenate margin, while plants from localities south and south-west of these mountains have predominantly discrete leaves with crenate margins. 3. From Montagu westwards to near Worcester plants tend to have ovate corolla lobes with an acute to acuminate apex and slightly longer squamae. The somewhat larger flowers are cup-shaped and usually more or less turned downwards. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Usually growing on south-facing aspects of sheltered gravelly slopes under shrubs but more often under overhanging rocks. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Under overhanging rocks or under shrubs on sheltered S-facing slopes. Eastern Fynbos-Renosterveld. From: Bredenkamp, GJ; Bredenkamp, CL. 2019. Crassulaceae.
