Perennials with suberect or decumbent branches up to 0.25 m long, usually much branched, with fibrous roots. Leaves oblanceolate to obovate, rarely orbicular, (10-)15-25(-45) x 10-20(-30) mm, usually abruptly cuneate, obtuse or rounded, dorsiventrally compressed and often somewhat convex on both surfaces, often with indistinct horny margin in upper half, usually grey-green with or without darker spots and with flaking wax. Inflorescence a spike-like thyrse with 1(-2)-flowered cymes, 0.15-0.25 m long, green; pedicels (1-)2-3 mm long. Buds terete, abruptly tapering towards apex, spreading. Calyx 1.5-2.5 mm long, greyish green. Corolla with cylindrical tube 9-13 mm long, green more or less tinged brown; lobes broadly triangular, 2-2.5 mm long, cuspidate, rough and rarely with a few club-shaped trichomes in throat, white or more or less tinged pink and darker around throat and on mucro. Anthers exserted. Squamae transversely oblong to square, 0.8-1.1 x 1-1.2 mm, scarcely emarginate, usually broadest at or below middle. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. Succulent perennial to 35 cm. Leaves obovate to circular. Flowers in a spicate cyme, greenish and red, cylindric, not grooved, lobes short and cuspidate, forming a frill, anthers shortly exserted. Very few records of populations of this species from east of the Hottentotsholland Mountains are available so that it has not been possible to evaluate whether this more robust eastern form should be given separate rank. The robust straight stems distinguish A. hemisphaericus from A. roaneanus, but too little material is available to determine whether the latter is just a form of the former. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Rocky, granitic to sandstone slopes. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P; Bruyns, PV. 2012. Crassulaceae. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 468-477. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Localized populations on the Cape Peninsula and occasionally in the Hottentotsholland Mountains and eastwards from near Caledon to Worcester. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
