Noronhia foveolata (E.Mey.) Hong-Wa & Besnard subsp. major (I.Verd.) Hong-Wa & Besnard
Indigenous

Morphological description

This subspecies is distinguished principally on the large fruits which are about the size of a small walnut. Before maturity these drupes have a rather characteristic shape being more or less ovate in outline, subquadrate and with a ridge over the obtuse apex, rather like a duck's bill. When mature they are more or less oblong, almost 3 cm long and 2 cm in diameter. The flesh is rather thin and the mesocarp hard with quite a large seed cavity. Other distinguishing characters are the glabrous branchlets, the large leaves, up to 7 cm long and 3.7 cm broad, and the habit being a tall forest tree. From: Verdoorn, IC. 1963. Oleaceae. Fl. S. Africa 26: 100-128. Dept. Agric. and Technical Services, Pretoria. [CC BY] As: Linociera foveolata (E.Mey.) Knobl. subsp. major I.Verd.

Forest tree, up to 30 m high. Inflorescence, leaves and twigs as in subsp. foveolatus, but leaves usually not more than twice as long as broad. Fruits up to 27 x 20 mm. Flowers white, sometimes tinted pink. From: Retief, E; Herman, PPJ. 1997. Plants of the northern provinces of South Africa: Keys and diagnostic characters. Strelitzia 6: 1-681. National Botanical Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY] As: Chionanthus foveolatus (E.Mey.) Stearn subsp. major (I.Verd.) Stearn

Diagnostic description

In the large fruits L. foveolata subsp. major resembles L. peglerae and L. battiscombei, differing from the former in the smaller leaves, up to 7 cm long as against 13 cm long in L. peglerae, and from the latter in the inflorescence being branched, not glomerate. From: Verdoorn, IC. 1963. Oleaceae. Fl. S. Africa 26: 100-128. Dept. Agric. and Technical Services, Pretoria. [CC BY] As: Linociera foveolata (E.Mey.) Knobl. subsp. major I.Verd.

Habitat

High altitude forests.

Distribution

Found, to date, only in the high altitude forests of the eastern Transvaal. Recorded from the Barberton, Pilgrim's Rest and Letaba districts of the Transvaal. From: Verdoorn, IC. 1963. Oleaceae. Fl. S. Africa 26: 100-128. Dept. Agric. and Technical Services, Pretoria. [CC BY] As: Linociera foveolata (E.Mey.) Knobl. subsp. major I.Verd.
