Plants 300-600 mm high. Corm ± globose, 8-13 mm diam.; tunics of fine, ± netted fibres. Stem usually with 1 to 3 short, suberect branches. Leaves usually 4 or 5, lower 3 or 4 linear to narrowly sword-shaped, ± as long as stem, 2-5 mm wide, firm, often slightly twisted, uppermost leaf sheathing stem with short free apex. Main spike crowded, mostly 6- to 12-flowered; bracts 5-7 mm long, translucent, usually flushed pink, outer with 3 prominent veins, 3-toothed, central tooth sometimes much exceeding laterals, inner 2-veined, 2-toothed. Flowers rotate, pale pink, mauve or ± white, usually with darker veins radiating from tepal bases, usually strongly scented; perianth tube filiform, 4-6 mm long; tepals united basally for ± 1 mm, ± elliptic, obtuse, 10-16 mm long, spreading. Filaments inserted at top of tube, 3.5-4.5 mm long, broader at base; anthers ± linear, 3.0-4.5 mm long, white to creamy yellow. Perennial herb, geophyte, 0.3-0.6 m high; corm ovoid or subglobose, tunics of fine fibres, confluent and reticulate above; stem wiry, often simple. Leaves 3-5, linear to ensiform, usually spirally twisted, 50-350 x 2-5 mm, (sub)erect, midrib slightly prominent. Bracts ovate, shortly tricuspidate or tridentate, pellucid, usually pinkish with dark veins. Inflorescence a short, compact, subcapitate spike, 4-12-flowered; rachis ± flexuose; flowers pink, mauve or white with darker streaks; perianth tube filiform, 4-6 mm long; tepals spreading, oblong, obtuse, connate, subequal. Stamens exserted, tapering above; anthers linear-oblong. Ovary rotund; style usually reaching middle of filaments; branches oblanceolate or linear and slightly expanded towards apex, conduplicate. Recognized by its small flowers, among the smallest in sect. Ixia, I. flexuosa has a perianth tube typically 5-6 mm long and ovate tepals, mostly 10-14 mm long, thus about twice as long as the tube (some collections including Goldblatt & Manning 11,543A have flowers with a perianth tube only ±4 mm long and tepals ±8 mm long). Colored white to pink or light purple with fine, dark longitudinal veining on the lower half of the tepals, the flowers have a penetrating, honeysuckle-like scent. The style is relatively long, usually dividing between the base and middle of the anthers, rarely just below the anther bases. The stem may have up to four short, erect branches seldom bearing more than six flowers, whereas the main spike has up to 15 flowers. The leaves are linear to narrowly sword-shaped, mostly 2-5 mm wide and often less than a third as long as the wiry stems. Somewhat unusual in the section, the outer floral bracts usually have three prominent veins terminating in three short, sometimes very acute teeth. Smaller-flowered morphs of I. polystachya are easily confused with I. flexuosa but have outer floral bracts with a single prominent central tooth and flowers with a solid, darker center. Lacking dark pigment in the center of the flower, Ixia flexuosa fits uncomfortably in sect. Ixia, also because the perianth tube is slightly flared near the apex for ±1.5 mm and the flowers are conspicuously scented. Despite its predominantly filiform perianth tube (typical of sect. Ixia), I. flexuosa most closely resembles I. orientalis L. Bolus (sect. Hyalis), which has a narrowly funnel-shaped perianth tube, almost filiform in the lower half. Close examination is required to separate the two. I. flexuosa has the filaments broadened basally and the style usually reaching to between the base to middle of the anthers (rarely slightly below the anther bases), whereas I. orientalis has outer floral bracts with a single central tooth, sometimes with a shorter lobe or tooth on either side of the central cusp, uniformly slender filaments, and the style typically dividing close to the filament apices or opposite the anther bases. Flowers of both species produce small quantities of nectar, I. flexuosa being the only member of sect. Ixia known to produce nectar. Ixia flexuosa is probably most closely related to I. patens, which also has slender, wiry stems, and flowers lacking a dark central stain, but this species has larger, deep pink (rarely red) flowers without the dark longitudinal veins of I. flexuosa. Floral scent in the two species appears identical, although of weaker intensity in I. patens. We were unable to detect any trace of nectar in flowers of I. patens.
