Bulbs 15-25 mm long. Leaves 3-5, 15-35 mm long, 6-11 mm broad, spreading or somewhat erect-spreading, with a distinctly petiole-like base; the sides of the leaf towards the base usually turned up, forming a gutter-like shape, the sides folding in in dried material. Inflorescence 60-90 mm long with a rather lax arrangement of the spreading pedicels. Flowers usually fewer than 20, 'dull red'. From: Jessop, JP. 1970. Studies in the bulbous Liliaceae: 1. Scilla, Schizocarphus and Ledebouria. J. S. African Bot. 36(4): 233-266. [CC BY]
Bulbous geophyte, 7-12 cm. Leaves ascending, soft, lanceolate to ovate, narrowed below, reddish beneath. Flowers in broad racemes, purple or pink and white, pedicels longer than flowers. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P; Snijman, DA. 2012. Hyacinthaceae: Ledebouria Roth. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 111-112. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
In the east of its range it merges with the smaller forms of L. cooperi. The leaf-form does not always provide adequate grounds for separation, but the laxer inflorescence in L. ovalifolia can generally be regarded as diagnostic. Confusion with L. revoluta is also possible, but the shape of the base of the leaf, the smaller bulb and form of the inflorescence provide characters for separation. From: Jessop, JP. 1970. Studies in the bulbous Liliaceae: 1. Scilla, Schizocarphus and Ledebouria. J. S. African Bot. 36(4): 233-266. [CC BY]
Records suggest a preference for rocky habitats. From: Jessop, JP. 1970. Studies in the bulbous Liliaceae: 1. Scilla, Schizocarphus and Ledebouria. J. S. African Bot. 36(4): 233-266. [CC BY]
Rocky places, often coastal limestone. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P; Snijman, DA. 2012. Hyacinthaceae: Ledebouria Roth. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 111-112. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Has been collected from Bot River, in the west, to Plettenberg Bay in the east; being restricted to the coastal belt, although occurring as far inland as Bonnievale. From: Jessop, JP. 1970. Studies in the bulbous Liliaceae: 1. Scilla, Schizocarphus and Ledebouria. J. S. African Bot. 36(4): 233-266. [CC BY]
Hex River Valley to Humansdorp. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P; Snijman, DA. 2012. Hyacinthaceae: Ledebouria Roth.
