Morphological description

Dwarf woody shrublet c. 400 mm to 1 m tall, virgately well branched, old stems bare, young branches pubescent, hairs up to 0.1-0.15 mm long, ± recurved, very minutely glandular as well, glands often oozing and stem then varnished, closely leafy. Leaves opposite, quickly alternate upwards, not fascicled, largest 4-15 x 0.7-1.2 mm, ± spreading, linear-lanceolate, acute or subacute, apiculate, base slightly narrowed, margins entire, plane, texture moderately thick, blade often longitudinally grooved on upper surface, glandular-punctate, glands often oozing, surface then varnished. Inflorescence a crowded or somewhat lax many-flowered raceme c. 25-100 x 12-18 mm in flower, elongating slightly in fruit, solitary at tips of many leafy branchlets. Bract adnate to pedicel and sometimes base of calyx as well, lowermost 5.1-10 x 0.9-1.2 mm, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, acuminate, coarse hairs up to 0.25-1.2 mm long on margins, some of upper bracts often with hairs on lower back, glandular hairs to 0.1-0.25 mm long also on margins, and to 0.1 mm on both faces. Pedicel 0.1 - 0.6 mm long. Calyx 2.8-5 mm long, campanulate, subequally 5-lobed roughly halfway to base, coarse spreading hairs up to 0.5-1 mm long on margins, also on outside, sometimes scattered there, together with glandular hairs up to 0.1-0.25 mm long, inside many minute glandular hairs, sometimes a few acute ones as well, whole calyx very viscous. Corolla tube 5.5-9 mm long, funnel-shaped, limb 5-8 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.8-3 x 1-1.8 mm, anticous lobe 2.3-4 x 1-2 mm, all lobes elliptic-oblong, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1-1.8 mm long, anthers in mouth or throat, anticous filaments 2-3 mm long, anthers well exerted. Stigma and style c. 6-9 mm long, style pubescent, hairs mixed glandular and eglandular or glandular only. Ovary c. 1 x 0.5 mm, minutely glandular on upper half. Cocci c. 2-2.8 x 1.2 mm, red-brown, smooth, minutely glandular on upper part, inner face plain, pair of cocci held within the persistent calyx. From: Hilliard, OM. 1999. Distribution
