PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / FABALES / FABACEAE / PAPILIONOIDEAE / PODALYRIEAE / PODALYRIA / ORBICULARIS
Erect, virgate shrubs up to 1.5 m tall; sprouting from a woody rootstock after fire. Leaves (8-)10-30(-45) x 8-18(-44) mm, obovate, ovate, broadly elliptic to circular, flat, with margins slightly recurved (markedly so on old plants); apex mucronulate; base obtuse to rounded or sometimes almost cordate; upper surface sparsely pubescent, shiny glabrescent, venation distinct; lower surface densely tomentose, sometimes glabrescent, venation often distinct on larger leaves; petioles 1-2 mm long. Inflorescences 1-4-flowered, often appearing paniculate at branch tips because of reduction in size of subtending leaves. Peduncles as long as or shorter than the subtending leaves, rarely longer. Bracts 3.5-6.0 x 4-5 mm broad, broadly obovate, concave, with a broad zone of attachment, apex rounded, mucronulate, often splitting near tip as bud develops, not calyptrate. Pedicel 4-7 mm long. Bracteoles sometimes present, minute, caducous. Calyx more than half as long (but not as long as) keel; lobes triangular, acuminate, much longer than tube, becoming reflexed at anthesis, tube with a split (disruption) between upper two lobes; tomentose. Corolla pink with a white nectar guide. Standard transversely elliptic, 22-25 mm broad. Nectar well double or one large and one small opening. Ovary 7-14-ovuled. Pods obliquely oblong, inflated, tomentose. Seeds uniform brown. From: Schutte-Vlok, AL; Van Wyk, B-E. 2011. A taxonomic revision of Podalyria (Fabaceae). Syst. Bot. 36(3): 631-660. Erect, willowy, resprouting shrub to 1.5 m. Leaves 1-foliolate, ovate to orbicular, margins slightly rolled under, hairy to shiny glabrescent above, felted beneath. Flowers pink and white, bracts broadly obovate. From: Schutte, AL. 2012. Fabaceae: Podalyria Willd. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 570-571. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
The only character used to distinguish P. reticulata from P. orbicularis is the prominent venation pattern visible on the lower surface of the leaves in the former. Field studies have, however, shown that this is an inconsistent character which tends to become more prominent with the ageing of the leaves. Since P. reticulata falls completely within the variation range of P. orbicularis, we have decided to subsume it within the latter. Podalyria orbicularis has broadly obovate bracts with a rounded apex which becomes torn as the bud increases in size; leaves with slightly recurved margins and a shiny glabrescent upper surface (when plants are mature) and inflorescences with long peduncles (about half the length of the subtending leaf on old plants; about as long as or slightly shorter than the subtending leaf when coppicing after fire). It may be confused with P. hirsuta, but the latter has lanceolate bracts with an apiculate apex, which does not split as the bud develops. The leaves of P. hirsuta are flat and have a densely tomentose upper surface and the inflorescences have shorter peduncles (less than half the length of the subtending leaf).
