B. haemanthoides is a robust species, recognised by massive, substantially exposed, solitary or offset-forming bulbs with upright fans of broad, strap-shaped, flat or channelled, glaucous leaves that are sometimes spirally twisted towards the tip, with undulate or flat margins and obtuse tips. The flowerheads appear during the dormant period, directly after the leaves have died back in early summer (from late October) or up until late summer (February). They initially have a dense, brush-like appearance, with prominent spathe bracts (up to 150 mm long, up to 85 mm wide) with obtuse tips, and white, cream or light yellow flowers with erect or spreading tepals ageing to light pink. Individual flowers are short-lived, lasting only a few days. The flowerhead lasts no more than one week and the pedicels elongate markedly thereafter, forming a spherical infructescence. The bulbs undergo a long, dry summer-dormant period and are very long-lived, with a lifespan estimated at up to a century or more in the wild. B. disticha differs in having widely spreading heads of bright pink, reddish-pink or red flowers with strongly reflexed tepals, and relatively narrow, acute-tipped spathe bracts up to 30 mm wide. The leaves of the latter are mostly narrower (10-40 mm wide), with acute tips, and the bulbs are usually solitary. The subspecies of B. haemanthoides are distinguished by differences in spathe bract size, tepal length and orientation, filament length, unripe anther colour, flowering time, habitat and distribution. From: Duncan, GD. 2016. The Amaryllidaceae of southern Africa. Umdaus Press, Pretoria. [All rights reserved]
Boophone haemanthoides differs from B. disticha in the following : The perianth tube is shorter. The perianth segments remain erect or sub-erect until they wither. The spathe valves are larger. The perianth is cream-coloured becoming reddish only with age. From: Gerstner, J; Leighton, FM; Levyns, MRB. 1947. Plantae novae Africanae. Series XXVII. J. S. African Bot. 13: 53-64. [CC BY]
