Crassula perforata Thunb.

Morphological description

Perennial shrublets or scramblers with branches up to 0.6 m long, rarely much branched, with old leaves not deciduous. Leaves ovate, rarely lanceolate, (4-)8-20 x 3-15 mm, acute or obtuse, abruptly constricted towards base and more or less fused to opposite leaf, usually slightly convex on both surfaces, glabrous to ciliate, glaucous or sometimes green and with yellow or red horny margin. Inflorescence an elongate, rarely short rounded thyrse with sessile flowers, with peduncle usually indistinct due to a gradual change from leaves to bracts. Calyx: lobes triangular to narrowly oblong-triangular, 0.5-1 mm long, bluntly acute, glabrous, ridged and somewhat fleshy, usually brown to red. Corolla tubular, fused at base for c. 0.1 mm, cream to pale yellow; lobes elliptic-oblong, 2-2.5 mm long, acute or obtuse, spreading to recurved later. Stamens with brown anthers. Squamae oblong, 0.3-0.5 x 0.1-0.3 mm, truncate or rounded, first somewhat constricted below apex then gradually tapering towards base, fleshy, yellow. Flowering period: November-April, but often with sporadic inflorescences throughout the year. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Inflorescence an elongate thyrse, sessile flowers; peduncle indistinct, gradual change from leaves to bracts. Calyx fleshy, acute, glabrous ridges, brown to red. Corolla tubular, scarcely fused, cream-coloured to pale yellow; lobes elliptic-oblong, 2.0-2.5 mm long, acute or obtuse, spreading to recurved later. Flowering time Nov.-Apr. Shrublet to 60 cm. Leaves opposite, ovate to lanceolate, fused at base to opposite leaf, margins horny, red or yellow. Flowers in subsessile, elongate, rounded clusters, tubular, sessile, cream-coloured to yellow, petals ± 2.5 mm long. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P; Bruyns, PV. 2012. Crassulaceae. Diagnostic description

A very variable species with leaves showing a range from ovate to lanceolate, with or without marginal cilia and with a more or less distinctly coloured horny margin. There is a form from the mountains along the Langkloof in which the length of the inflorescence may vary from very elongated to almost rounded, or very shortened and delicate. In extreme forms the whole plant is smaller and the leaves are fused almost in a ring around the branches. The smaller flowers and adpressed bracts at the base of the inflorescence do not allow confusion with similar vegetative features of some forms of C. rupestris. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Endemic to EC: C. perforata Thunb subsp. kougaensis Van Jaarsv. & A.E.van Wyk. From: Bredenkamp, GJ; Bredenkamp, CL. 2019. Crassulaceae. In: CL Bredenkamp (ed.), A Flora of the Eastern Cape Province. Strelitzia 41(1): 804-839. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
