Radinosiphon lomatensis (N.E.Br.) N.E.Br.
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Plants 300-750 mm high. Corm 8-15 mm diam., producing naked stolons from base; tunics papery, becoming finely fibrous. Stem simple or branched. Leaves 6 to 9, mostly basal and reaching base of spike, narrowly lanceolate, 150-300 x 4-15 mm, cauline leaves ± 3, progressively smaller and entirely sheathing. Spike inclined, 2- to 10-flowered; bracts 10-18 mm long. Flowers pale to deep pink, all or only lower 3 tepals with dark pink median streak; tube (25-)30-45 mm long; tepals ± spreading, linear to lanceolate, 12-15 x 2-3, uppermost lanceolate, 3-7 mm wide. Filaments 6-7 mm long, exserted ± 4 mm from tube; anthers 5-6 mm long, purple. Style dividing opposite or beyond anther tips, branches 2-3 mm long. Capsules subglobose, ± 10 mm long. Seeds up to 8 per locule, 2-3 mm diam. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Diagnostic description

Distinguished from Radinosiphon leptostachya by its larger flowers, with longer perianth tube, (25-)30-45 mm long, broader tepals, the uppermost 12-15 x 3-7 mm, slightly longer filaments 6-7 mm long, and anthers 5-6 mm long. Plants of R. lomatensis reproduce vegetatively by slender, naked stolons quite different from the thick, scaly rhizomes developed in R. leptostachya. The species is evidently outcrossing, producing larger capsules with up to 8 seeds per locule, unlike autogamous R. leptostachya, which produces small capsules, 4-6 mm long, containing just 1 or 2 seeds (rarely up to 5 in tropical Africa) per locule. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Habitat

Quartzite outcrops in montane grassland. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Distribution

A local endemic restricted to the highlands between Pigg’s Peak in northern Eswatini and the mountains west of Lydenburg. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
