Morphological description

Perennial herb with a leaf rosette crowning a stout taproot, flowering stems one to several, lateral to the rosette, decumbent then erect to c. 30 cm, simple below, branching above, glabrous except for sparse white cottony hairs on the peduncles, remotely leafy, inflorescence branches bracteate. Radical leaves spreading, up to 15 x 4 cm, oblong in outline, narrowed to a broad, winged, petiole-like base, runcinate-pinnatifid or, in small leaves, merely coarsely toothed, lobes narrowly triangular or oblong, tips somewhat recurved, margins entire or nearly so, cauline leaves similar but sessile, soon passing into lanceolate-acuminate entire bracts. Heads on long nearly nude peduncles corymbose-paniculately arranged, less than 2 cm long, less than 1.5 cm across the expanded ligules, involucral bracts thinly white-cottony on the backs. Flowers white. Achenes reddish-brown, c. 9 mm long, about 4 mm of this slender beak, body of achene slender, cylindric, tapering into the beak, broadly ribbed, transversely wrinkled, rough with small upward-pointing projections.
