Tylecodon reticulatus (L.f.) Toelken subsp. reticulatus
NE Appendix III Indigenous

Morphological description

Young branches not less than 10 mm in diameter, but usually so short that they are difficult to distinguish from apex of main stem which has several growth points and is smooth or covered with crescent-shaped leaf scars which disappear after one year when peeling bark is produced. Inflorescence rigid, with flowers usually spreading; pedicels with sessile or short glands. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Diagnostic description

Some local variation was observed in the sessile glands on the pedicels and in the shape and size of the inflorescence. In cultivation the typical spinescent appearance of the spreading inflorescence is usually lost. Mature leaves of plants from southern Namaqualand are often glandular-pubescent while in other areas they are usually glabrous. Plants from the Knersvlakte usually have longer hairs on the inside of the corolla tube, but they cannot be confused with T. similis with its very slender stems. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Habitat

Growing on gravelly slopes, often associated with quartzite gravel. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Distribution

Recorded a few times from the Karas Mountains in southern South West Africa/Namibia and widespread in the western Cape Province from just north of Port Nolloth through most parts of Namaqualand into Bushmanland and, southwards through the Tanqua Karoo and southern parts of the Great Karoo as far east as near Willowmore as well as into the north-eastern Little Karoo. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
