Morphological description

Leaves with tubercles on the lower surface partly large, partly small, mostly truncate, arranged in distinct transverse bands; caulescent. From: Scott, CL. 1985. Stem up to 2 cm long, proliferous from the base. Leaves numerous, spirally arranged, ovate-lanceolate, very acuminate, with a minute mucro, 5-7.5 long, 2-2.5 cm broad towards the base, rather light-grey-green, not or scarcely a little shining, more or less erect, mostly a little curved laterally like a sickle towards the tip, curved a little inwards or outwards towards the tip, face concave, not tubercled, mostly with 1-3 longitudinal lines only a little prominent, back obliquely and obtusely keeled from the middle or towards the tip, tubercled, with fine longitudinal lines very inconspicuously raised, smooth at the base; tubercles of the back shining, partly large, partly small, the larger ones distinctly prominent, mostly truncate at their tip, transverse-oblong, often arranged in indistinct cross-rows, solitary or confluent to shorter or rarely longer cross-lines, white, the smaller ones greenish-white, less prominent, mostly less numerous, mostly wanting towards the leaftip, transverse-oblong, seldom roundish, irregularly distributed between the larger ones. Peduncle simple, about 40 cm long, with a few membranaceous sterile bracts about 5-6 mm long. Flowers with pedicels about 5 mm long and with bracts about 3-4 mm long, about 12-14 mm long, tube distinctly curved, broadened towards the base, but narrowed at the base, segments shorter than the tube, bilabiate. Diagnostic description

Distribution

H. fasciata var. browniana is isolated from the main body of H. fasciata, occurring only in a limited area south of Uitenhage. From: Scott, CL. 1985.
