Morphological description

Strongly aromatic twiggy shrublet forming loose clumps, stems sometimes prostrate or decumbent, up to c. 450 mm long, brittle, much branched, clad in long coarse spreading white hairs, gland-tipped or not, or these hairs occasionally wanting, as well as short spreading gland-tipped hairs, leafy. Leaves mostly 15-60 x 4-35 mm, narrowly to broadly elliptic or ovate, apex obtuse to subacute, base cuneate, tapering into a short petiole-like part, margins subentire to coarsely and often somewhat irregularly toothed or lobulate, both surfaces shaggy with gland-tipped hairs. Flowers opening at dusk or in dull light; spikes 1 to several flowered, the flowers then usually crowded. Bracts adnate to calyx for 1.5-4 mm, resembling the leaves but smaller. Calyx 8-13 mm long, lips 4-6 mm long, glandular-pubescent. Corolla tube 30-58 mm long, glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.2-0.3 mm long, limb held horizontally, regular; mouth with circlet of long unicellular hairs, sometimes weakly developed on anticous side, or wanting; lobes deeply notched, c. 6-11 mm long, pink to crimson and glandular-puberulous outside, glabrous inside, usually white, sometimes brilliant orange near base. Stamens 4, 2 anticous anthers 1.5-2.5 mm long, shortly exserted, 2 posticous ones 3-3.5 mm long, included. Stigma 4.5-6 mm long, exserted. Capsule 7-11 x 4-6 mm. Seeds c. 1.8 x 1.2 mm, angled, colliculate, pallid. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]

Diagnostic description

Zaluzianskya ovata shows considerable variation in leaf size, attendant upon growing conditions; much more interesting is the occasional presence of a bright orange or red band around the mouth of the corolla. This colour zonation may also be found in the allied Z. distans, and it is a constant feature of Z. chrysops. These three species are sympatric over part of their ranges. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]

Habitat

The plants favour partly shaded cliff faces, but at very high altitudes they will thrive in bare silty or gravelly patches. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]
