Geophyte, 190-250 mm high. Bulb globose, 15-20 mm in diameter, offset-forming; tunic multilayered, outer layers dark brown, spongy; inner cataphyll translucent white, adhering to leaf bases, apex obtuse. Leaves 2, lanceolate, 85-120 x 12-30 mm, spreading to suberect, light green, slightly canaliculate, upper surface plain or light marked with dark green or light to dark brownish-maroon blotches; leaf margins flat to slightly undulate; leaf bases clasping, 10-40 mm long; primary seedling leaf flat, prostrate. Inflorescence racemose, many-flowered, sterile apex long; scape erect, 110-170 mm long, dull purple to maroon, or light green with large purple blotches, covered with a delicate waxy bloom; rachis erect, light green, or dull purple to maroon, apex light to bright golden orange, rarely light yellow; pedicels suberect, 5-7 mm long, light golden yellow to greenish-yellow; lower bracts ovate, becoming lanceolate above, 3-7 x 1-4 mm, dark golden yellow, purple or green, apices purple. Perianth zygomorphic, tubular, dark golden yellow or orange, rarely light yellow, pendulous; tube cylindrical, 6 mm long; outer tepals oblong, 13-18 x 7-9 mm, apical gibbosities dark golden orange or bright green; inner tepals oblong obovate, 26-28 x 9-12 mm, protruding well beyond outer tepals, apices slightly to widely spreading. Stamens included, straight; filaments white to light yellowish-orange, 21-28 mm long. Ovary ellipsoid, 4-5 x 3-4 mm, light green; style included, straight, 20-25 mm long, light yellowish-orange. Restricted to the middle and upper slopes of the Bainskloof Mountains west of Worcester, and to a hillside at relatively low altitude between Wolseley and Tulbagh, and also recorded from Paarl Mountain.
