Bulb 5-8 cm diam. contracted into a short neck, covered with a tough membranous tunic. Leaves 4-9, bifarious, produced in autumn and dying down after winter rains prior to next flowering, 30-45 cm long, 1-2 cm broad, slightly keeled and slightly folded upwards. Scape 30-45 cm tall, solid, slightly compressed, greyish-purple to reddish-brown and glaucous towards base, green above. Umbel usually 6-12-flowered, occasionally up to 16-flowered; pedicels 3-6 cm long in flower and elongating in fruit up to about 14 cm; spathe valves 2, purplish-red, 5-8 cm long. Perianth deep rose-pink to nearly white, lemon-yellow in throat, 7-11 cm long, more or less regular except for declinate stamens and style; tube about 1 cm long; segments 1-2-5 cm broad, the 3 outer slightly narrower or broader than the inner. Stamens and style shorter than the perianth. Capsule globose, membranous, dehiscing irregularly; seeds few, bulbiform. From: Dyer, RA; Letty, CL. 1955. Amaryllis belladonna L. Fl. Pl. South Africa 30: t.1200 [CC BY]
Perennial geophyte, up to 0.9 m high. Leaves 5-11, dry at flowering, spreading to suberect, lanceolate, 15-75 mm wide, channelled, hairless, midrib prominent. Flowers 6-12, in a ± 1-sided or evenly spreading cluster, trumpet-shaped, white to pink, usually pale lemon at base, fragrant, segments 80-100 mm long; stamens and style declinate. Flowering time Feb.-Apr. From: Snijman, DA; McMaster, JC. 2019. Amaryllidaceae. In: CL Bredenkamp (ed.), A Flora of the Eastern Cape Province. Strelitzia 41(3): 1615-1632. Bulbous geophyte to 90 cm. Leaves 5-11, dry or absent at flowering, rosulate, suberect, narrowly to broadly lanceolate, channelled, midrib prominent. Flowers usually 6-12, often turned to 1 side, large, trumpet-shaped, pink to white, throat usually pale lemon, fragrant. From: Snijman, DA. 2012. Amaryllidaceae. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 53-62. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
The flowers show considerable natural variability, both in size and colour. The perianth varies from deep rose pink to nearly white and is 7-11 cm long. Some of the forms have been afforded varietal and even specific rank but field observations do not support this treatment. The peduncle of A. belladonna persists for a lengthy period after the ripening of the seeds. This contrasts with the collapse of the peduncle just above the bulb of species of Brunsvigia and Crossyne ['as Boophone'] for example, whose ripe inflorescences are rolled about the veld by wind during seed dispersal. From: Dyer, RA; Letty, CL. 1955. Amaryllis belladonna L. Fl. Pl. South Africa 30: t.1200 [CC BY]
A. belladonna is fairly common in the south western Cape coastal districts on bushy hillsides, on banks of rivers and in other not too dry localities. Plants overgrown by bushes or trees remain mostly barren while those in clearings or in burnt veld flower in profusion. From: Dyer, RA; Letty, CL. 1955. Amaryllis belladonna L. Fl. Pl.
