Resprouting shrub (or undershrub), 20-80 cm high. Branches caulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches glabrescent. Leaves herbaceous, cauline, transversely applanate or incurved, longitudinally straight, dead basal leaves not persistent, (4-)6-30(-40) x (1-)2-5(-8) mm, narrowly oblong, lanceolate or ovate, adaxially sparsely or copiously hairy, if sparsely hairy then hairs unevenly spread, largely confined to margin and mid-vein, abaxially copiously hairy, indumentum spinous and appressed, hairs similar in length, trichomes simple or pustular; leaf margin entire; apex acute or obtuse; mid-vein abaxially unobtrusive. Inflorescence of many flowered, compound cincinni, young flowering axis elongated, flower buds arranged in two distinct parallel rows, spreading greatly in fruiting stage. Bracts (2-)3-5(-7) x (1-)2-3(-4) mm, ovate. Flowers small (anterior petals 17-30 mm long), more than three per cymule, rotate. Sepals lanceolate, less than half of corolla length, similar in width, free, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy, non-velutinous; young apices incurved-applanate, brown trichomes on the adaxial surface wanting. Petals similar, the anterior petal lobes larger than the rest, posterior petals ca. 7 mm long, posterior petal lobes ca. 3 mm long, anterior petals ca. 8 mm long, anterior petal lobes ca. 3.5-4.0 mm long, predominantly violet-blue; abaxially hairy, hairs unevenly spread, largely confined to the lobes. Stamens similar in length, exserted in adult flowers; anthers dorsifixed; filaments free from petals above staminal scales. Staminal scales inserted at the throat of the corolla tube, 2-3 mm above the base of the corolla tube, usually well-developed, triangular, lateral lobes present, villous, area between scales also hairy. Style median sections glabrous. Mericarpids ovoid-trigonous; apex slightly rounded, tuberculate; hairs absent; lateral ridges inconspicuous; dorsal side smooth, vertical; dorsal keel wanting; ventral keel wanting. Lobostemon echioides flowers mainly from August to October, but collections of flowering specimens have been made throughout the year. From: Buys, MH. 2011. Revision of Lobostemon (Boraginaceae). Lobostemon echioides is one of the most successful species in the genus from a distributional point of view. It is especially abundant in the drier regions, being conspicuously absent from the wetter 33°S18°E and 34°S18°E degree squares. In this regard, L. echioides does not occur to the west of the Fold Mountains running north-south along the west coast of the Western Province. From: Buys, MH. 2011.
