Diagnostic description

Unique in the genus in the laxly branched stem and blue to blue-mauve flowers. The terete or subterete flowering stem, with conspicuously viscid or sticky patches below the nodes, is well differentiated from the plane leaves. The lowermost cauline leaf or spathe is inserted in the lower 1/3 of the flowering stem and is leaf-like, with a short unifacial blade. The only other species with a similar laxly branched stem with sticky internodes, Bobartia paniculata, has yellow flowers and a bract-like spathe inserted in the upper 1/3 of the stem at the top of a conspicuously elongated internode. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Habitat

Restricted to cooler, S-facing sandstone slopes, flowering mainly after fire. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Distribution
