Morphological description

Annual herb, primary stem 10-100 mm tall, simple or with a pair of branches from the base, these ascending or decumbent, they and the primary stem in all but the very smallest plants with a pair of branches, each subtended by a leaf, about midway or lower, pubescent with patent acute hairs up to 0.5-1 mm long, minutely glandular-puberulous as well. Leaves few, usually two radical and only one pair on each branch, blade 3-11 x 2-6 mm tapering into a flat petiolar part 1.5-10 mm long (roughly equalling blade), ovate to elliptic, apex subacute, margins entire to obscurely toothed, pubescent with acute hairs, longest (up to 1-1.5 mm) on margins especially of petiolar part. Flowers up to c. 15, often fewer, initially crowded in a head, elongating into a spike in fruit, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx for 2-3 mm, lowermost 4-15 x 2-7 mm, smaller upwards, ovate in upper half then contracted into a broad shaft, pubescent on both surfaces, hairs often sparser on posticous face, longest hairs on lower margins, up to 1-1.7 mm long. Calyx 3-5 mm long, lips 0.6-1.2 mm, pubescent with acute hairs up to 0.5-1 mm long. Corolla tube 4-8.5 mm long (throat 0.7-1 mm in diam.), very minutely glandular-puberulous, limb 2.54 mm in diam., nearly regular, mouth either glabrous or partially encircled by a few acute hairs, lobes 1-1.8 x 0.6-1 mm, narrowly oblong with expanded tip, shortly bifid to entire (in one flower), bright purplish-pink above, with a yellow/orange star-shaped patch around mouth, sometimes with a crimson fleck as well at base of each lobe. Stamens 4, posticous pair included, anthers 0.6 mm long (very rarely reduced to a single tiny anther), anticous pair exserted, anthers 0.2 mm long. Stigma 0.8-1.5 mm long, exserted. Style 2.5-5 mm long. Ovary c. 1.2 x 0.6 mm. Capsules 4-5 x 2.5-2.7 mm. Seeds c. 0.4 x 0.3 mm, subglobose when fully ripe, pale amber-colour, strongly colliculate. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. Annual to 10 cm, stems with spreading hairs. Leaves few, hairy. Flowers crowded in a head, tube minutely glandular-hairy, 4-9 mm long, lobes bifid, mauve to pink inside with star-shaped, orange centre and orange outside, stamens 4. Diagnostic description

Its relationship lies with Z. bella and Z. venusta, with both of which it is partly sympatric, but it is easily recognized by its much smaller flowers, particularly corolla and anthers. The almost hispid patent hairs on the stems, which nearly always carry at least one pair of leaves above the radical ones, will at once distinguish it from Z. cohabitans, with which it is very easily confused. The two species differ further in a number of details, including the shape of the bracts and the number of stamens: four in Z. minima, two in Z. cohabitans. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. Habitat

It favours stony places over shale or clay, on both flats and slopes. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]
