Phyllopodium cephalophorum (Thunb.) Hilliard
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Annual herb c. 55-300 mm tall, stem simple to branched from the base, these branches often decumbent, all branches branching above into corymbose compound inflorescences, stems pilose with eglandular hairs up to 1-2 mm long, hairs either retrorse in upper part becoming ± patent towards base or patent throughout, small glandular hairs often present as well especially on upper parts, ± sessile to shortly stipitate when eglandular hairs retrorse, longer (up to 0.2 mm) when hairs patent, stems very leafy, dwarf axillary shoots often present. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, lower primary leaves c. 15-50(-70) x 2-5(-7)mm, oblanceolate tapering to a petiolar part best developed in large leaves, upper and axillary leaves quickly smaller, margins with 2-7 pairs of teeth, uppermost leaves sometimes entire, both surfaces pilose, hairs (especially on lower margins) up to 0.75-2 mm long. Flowers many in crowded heads c. 7-13 mm in diameter, terminating all the branchlets. Bracts 3-7 x 0.75-1.6 mm, smaller upwards, outermost mostly lanceolate-ovate, adnate to pedicel and ± halfway up calyx, ± glabrous to puberulous in apical part becoming pubescent to hirsute in lower half, these hairs 0.75-2 mm long. Pedicels of lowermost flowers up to 0.5 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, either calyx tube 0.4-1.5 mm long, the anticous lobes 1.5-3 x 0.5-0.8 mm with the lip split 0.5-1.75 mm, or 3 posticous lobes sometimes free to the base, the anticous lobes then c. 3.5-5 mm long, the lip split 1.75-3 mm, pilose to pubescent. Corolla tube 2.5-4.5 x 0.75-4 mm broadening slightly in the throat, limb 4-7 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-2.5 x 6.5-1.25 mm, anticous lobe (1.75-)2.5-4 x 0.5-1.2 mm, all lobes oblong, usually mauve, occasionally pink or white, bearded on posticous lip and down back of throat, hairs often extending onto the lobes of the anticous lip. Stamens 4, anthers 0.5-0.8 mm long. Stigma well exserted. Capsules c. 3-3.5 x 1.75 mm Seeds c. 0.4 mm long, elliptic in outline, smooth, dark blue-grey. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. Diagnostic description

P. cephalophorum can be recognized by its shaggy white indumentum, narrow toothed leaves and masses of small round heads corymbosely arranged, the bracts characteristically glabrous to puberulous at the tips and becoming shaggy in the lower half. It is often confused with P. capitatum. Phyllopodium cephalophorum is closely allied to P. phyllopodioides and in areas where they are sympatric they may be difficult to distinguish. Habitat

It appears to be a very common plant on sandy flats. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]
