Shrubs 0.6 m tall with many stems arising from a persistent rootstock coppicing after fires. Branches numerous, erect, slender, thinly clothed with short adpressed pubescence. Leaves of male plants up to 5 cm long, 5 mm broad, of female plants up to 5.7 cm long, 6.3 mm broad usually much less, in both sexes linear or linear-oblanceolate, somewhat falcate, acute, mucronate twisted and sparsely adpressed-pubescent at the base, glabrous, coriaceous smooth, shining. Male involucral leaves similar to the stem leaves, decreasing in size towards the head, pale, about 10 in number, not concealing the head. Male inflorescence 1-1.3 cm diam., globose, solitary, terminal, yellow, giving off a pleasant fruity smell. Basal bracts variable in size and shape, 3.5 mm long, 2.5 mm broad, brown, glabrous, ciliate, few in number. Floral bracts 1.6 mm long, 1.2 mm broad, sub-quadrangular, minutely ciliate above, very sparsely pubescent, surrounded below by a tuft of hairs. Floral bud 5 mm long, swollen and yellow at the apex, very sparsely pubescent in the middle. Perianth tube 2 mm long, sparsely pubescent above. Claw 1.5 mm long, recurved 180° and more, sparsely pubescent. Limb 1.5 mm long, glabrous, concave, hooked. Anthers 1 mm long, curled upwards. Pollen triangular in polar view with sides 28 µ long and polar depth 17µ. Stigma abortive, 1 mm long, clavate, minutely cleft, acting as a pollen presenter. Style 3.5 mm long, subulate, yellow. Nectar seen at the apices of the hypogynous scales in the throat of the perianth tube. Receptacle 1 cm long, 3 mm diam., clavate. Female involucral leaves lanceolate, crowded, pale, broader than the stem leaves, forming a cup around the head. Female inflorescence 2 cm long, 1.2 cm diam., ovoid, with the florets arranged in 8 ascending spirals of about 8 in each, giving off a pleasant fruity smell. Basal bracts 8.5 mm long, 5.25 mm broad, ovate, glabrous, ciliate, brown above, closely imbricating the lower part of the head, about 9 in number. Floral bracts 3.5 mm long, 7 mm broad, broadly elliptic, sub-retuse at the apex, laterally ciliate, pubescent across the middle. Floral bud 5 mm long, transversely compressed, glabrous at the apex and below, sides sparsely pubescent. Perianth segments imbricated forming a tube 3.5 mm long, laterals pubescent, anterior very sparsely pubescent. Claw 1 mm long, recurved almost 90°, glabrous. Limb 0.8 mm long, glabrous, posterior segment very much hooked. Staminodes 0.3 mm long, anterior often absent. Ovary 0.8 mm long, 0.6 mm broad, glabrous, lobed above. Style 3.5 mm long, glabrous. Stigma 0.4 mm broad, oblique, somewhat cleft. Hypogynous scales 1.4 mm long, tapering, pale. Nectar seen at the throat of the perianth tube. Receptacle 1.5 cm long, 4 mm diam., narrowly clavate. Mature female head indehiscent, 3 cm long, 2.2 cm diam., globose, with bracts broadly retuse, pubescent across the middle, adjacent bracts arranged in two ascending spiral rows. Fruit a samara, 6 mm long, 5.3 mm broad, compressed, narrowly winged, somewhat emarginate, dark brown, slightly pitted, glabrous but for a few hairs surrounding the basal scar. Subsp. phillipsii is a dense shrub 60 cm tall, with many stems arising from a persistent rootstock and with new leaves and branchlets thinly adpressed-pubescent. It has ovate basal bracts and a sparsely pubescent perianth. The cone bracts are pubescent across the middle. It differs from subsp. fragrans which has narrower leaves, with new leaves and branchlets sparsely villous, soon becoming glabrous, with glabrous perianths and with glabrous cone bracts. It also differs from subsp. natalense which has oblanceolate leaves which are somewhat broader and obtuse with a sharp point at the apex and with, in the male plants, a conspicuous involucre of very acute bract like leaves. From: Williams, IJM. 1972. A revision of the genus Leucadendron (Proteaceae). Contr. Bolus Herb. 3: 1-425. [All rights reserved]

General notes: This leucadendron now near the end of its flowering time, forms extensive formations above 2700' especially on soil derived from sandstone, not quartzite forming sandy loam. Below this alt. it is only found on mesoclines while Leucadedndron salignum occupies Xeroclines. Dominant above this altitude.
