A small, erect, sparsely branched, straggling shrub 0.7-1.2 m in height, with a single main stem to 20 mm in diam. Stems slender, 3-4 mm in diam., glabrous, slightly flexuose. Leaves ascending, linear, 25-65 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, broadly canaliculate on under surface, margins revolute; apex mucronate, terminating in an obliquely deflected spine; glabrous, dull glaucous but margins reddish. Inflorescence conic acute in bud, stellate when open, 20-30 mm in diam. Involucral receptacle broadly convex, 5 mm in diam. Involucral bracts 3-4 seriate, glabrous; outer series narrowly ovate, acuminate, 4-6 mm long, 2-6 mm wide; inner series lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, acuminate, 10-20 mm long, 2-5 mm wide, margins occasionally minutely ciliate; patent when open, creamy-white, the apices flushed with pink. Perianth 15-17 mm long, straight, glabrous externally except for prominently crinite apices of perianth limbs; tube 5 mm long, glabrous, externally ridged; claws almost as broad as tube region; limbs 5 mm long, linear-cymbiform acute, apices crinite with stiff, erect, white bristles. Anthers 4, subsessile, filiform. Style straight, 15-17 mm long, with a prominently obconic swelling proximally, tapering distally. Pollen presenter straight, slender, 4 mm long, slightly geniculate at junction with style. Ovary obconic, 2 mm long, covered with straight white trichomes. Hypogynous scales 0.5-0.7 mm long, ovate. Flowering takes place at the end of summer in the hottest, driest period of the year, beginning in late February, reaching a peak in March and April, eventually tailing off into June. The flowering time is just one of the features that separate this species from the related P. mucronifolia. However, the linear, revolute leaves, distinctly channelled on the under surface and terminating abruptly in a sharp, back-wardly deflected spine, serve as the most distinctive diagnostic character. A strictly lowland species occurring only in flat open country at elevations between 120 and 150 m, P. odorata is unusual in its edaphic requirements, favouring soils that are inimical to most other proteas. Heavy gravelly clays of the Klipheuvel beds (occasionally intermixed with wind-blown sand) are selectively preferred although the species has occasionally been found on Malmesbury shale. Despite experiencing a rather low mean annual rainfall of 450-500 mm, these sites are often inundated in winter, remaining waterlogged for weeks on end while during the rainless desiccating summers, the soil bakes to the consistency of concrete. The associated vegetation usually consists of Elytropappus rhinocerotis, Leucadendron stellare and Leucadendron thymifolium but at a few places Arthrocnemum natalense occurs as an associate, suggesting that brak or even slightly alkaline conditions are tolerated. At the time of writing, P. odorata must be numbered among the few proteas that can be regarded as rare or endangered species. Whatever its distribution area may have been in the past - and it seems likely that it has always been restricted to the Swartland - P. odorata is today confined to two small refugia within the region. The most extensive stand, consisting of several hundred individuals (perhaps as many as a thousand) is about 50 km north of Cape Town on the farm Groenfontein which is situated to the east of Katzenberg and a few kilometres south of the railway line linking Kalbaskraal and Groenrivier siding. There is also a small group between the bridge (over this railway line) on the national road to Malmesbury and Kalbaskraal village. To the east a second population consisting of barely a dozen individuals still survives at Joostenberg.
