Morphological description

Capitula disciform, on short peduncles. Involucral bracts with resin canals. Outer florets female, almost filiform. Cypselas of outer florets non-myxogenic, conspicuously wrinkled with scattered short-stalked glands, but without myxogenic cells. Pericarp several cell-layers thick. Inner florets hermaphrodite. Annual, erect or suberect herb, up to 300 mm high. Leaves alternate, sessile, bipinnatisect, lobes linear, acute, hairy. Capitula discoid, solitary, large, pedunculate; involucral bracts in several rows, obtuse, with broad scarious margins. Florets bisexual, corolla tubular, 4-lobed, yellow. Flowering time May-Oct. Annual herb, stems up to 150 mm long, procumbent. Leaves alternate, sessile; blade pinnatipartite, up to 20 mm long, segments linear, margins entire or sometimes bilobed, pubescent. Heads disciform, solitary, terminal, pedunculate. Involucral bracts ± 3-seriate, imbricate, with prominent resin canal. Receptacle epaleate. Flowers: outer female florets filiform; disc florets bisexual, 4- or 5-lobed, yellow; May, Aug.-Oct. Fruit of 2 kinds, glabrous; cypsela of female florets terete, tapering at both ends, conspicuously wrinkled, with glands in wrinkles; cypsela of disc florets obovoid, smooth or faintly ribbed. Like F. dichotoma but leaves sparsely pilose with linear-lanceolate lobes, involucral bracts with resin canals and often dark papery margins, flowerheads disciform; pappus absent, and cypselas dimorphic, outer ones tuberculate, inner ones 3-ribbed.
