Morphological description

Compact, dwarf succulent, with up to 40 branches but mostly fewer, 2 or 3 leaf-pairs to a branch. Leaves trigonous, narrowing gradually from base to tip, 20-50 x 5-12 mm. Flowers in cymes of 1-3, with bracts and bracteoles, outer spreading petals at most as long as calyx lobes, petals merging into filamentous staminodes, stiff, white, later yellowish. Fruit 5-locular, with broad valve wings and no closing body, 6-8 mm diam. From: Klak, C. 2013. Aizoaceae: Nelia. South Africa, Northern Cape, Namaqualand. Staanhoek Farm, 300m W of Wolfberg Road, 1.5 km N of the junction with the Kleinzee-Springbok Road.

General notes: Lowland succulent karoo of the Namaqualand coastal plain. Well-drained, clay, stony, rocky soil. Gentle slope (2-10). Quartzite. Full sun. Undisturbed, some mining nearby. De Beers Staanhoek Project plot 3, dwarf leaf, succulent shrubland on quartz pebble, plains and bedrock outcrops. Very rich in succulent species.
