Perennials, rarely biennials, erect and sometimes branching. Leaves triangular, (5-)10-20(-25) x 5-8 mm, sharply acute, becoming shorter towards inflorescence, dorsiventrally flattened, with marginal cilia at least at base, leathery, green to brown and often with sand remaining attached to them. Inflorescence a thyrse with one to several dichasia, terminal or axillary; peduncle usually indistinct. Calyx: lobes elliptic-oblong, 2.5-3(-4) mm long, rounded, with spreading marginal cilia, fleshy, green to brown. Corolla elongate-ampulliform, fused at base for 2-3 mm, white or cream often tinged red; lobes narrowly elliptic-oblong, 6-9 mm long, with blunt beak. Stamens with brown anthers. Occasionally branching perennial, 20-80 mm tall. Leaves densely overlapping, sessile, triangular, dorsiventrally flattened and leathery (becoming covered with sand), 10-20 x 5-8 mm, with marginal cilia near base. Flowers in a dense, usually terminal, rounded head, held close to leaves on a glabrous peduncle, elongate flask-shaped, petals 6-9 mm long, fused in lower 2-3 mm, white, often tinged red.
