Diagnostic description

Not infrequently there is overlapping in distribution with R. torulosa. When aberrant forms are recorded in such circumstances, it does not seem unreasonable to suggest that natural hybridization has taken place; an example of this is recorded under R. bolusii. In R. burchellii, besides the distinctive corona, the leaves are more constantly glabrous, or nearly so, and show a tendency to being cordate-ovate to cordate-lanceolate. B. Clarke 25, found near Barberton, in eastern Transvaal, seems closest related to R. burchellii, but differs in its miniature inflorescence, smaller corolla (shorter than 10 mm) and the absence of inner corona-lobes. From: Dyer, RA. 1980. Asclepiadaceae. In: OA Leistner (ed.). Fl. S. Africa 27(4): 1-88. [CC BY] As: Riocreuxia burchellii K.Schum.
