Diagnostic description

Melanospermum swazicum is allied to M. rupestre from which it differs in its annual habit, the stem branching only above the base (not perennial, the stems diffuse and richly branched from the base), in its more floriferous racemes with less leaflike bracts, and in floral details, the calyx being more deeply divided, the corolla tube shorter, the limb often smaller, and the posticous lip sometimes bearded. The hairs on stems, bracts and calyx are also shorter than in M. rupestre. The two species are allopatric, M. rupestre occurring further west in the Steenkampsbergen and along the Witwatersrand. Habitat

It grows in moist shaded peaty soil in the shelter of granite rocks. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]

Distribution

Melanospermum swazicum has been recorded principally from several sites on the hills around Mbabane. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]
