Crassula capitella Thunb. subsp. capitella
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Biennials, rarely perennials, without tuberous base, with one basal rosette and usually glabrous stems rarely with a few recurved hairs. Leaves linear-lanceolate to elliptic, rarely obovate, (15-)20-70(-100) x (5-)10-20(-35) mm, glabrous or with few recurved hairs and often with recurved marginal cilia. Inflorescence a spike-like thyrse with sessile dichasia, with glabrous bracts, if branched then from base. Calyx: lobes 1-2 mm long, glabrous except for a few marginal teeth. Corolla: lobes oblong, each with rounded dorsal appendage in terminal position and with fleshy petal apex spreading towards centre of flower. Anthers 0.4-0.8 mm long. Squamae oblong to transversely oblong, 0.4-0.7 x 0.4-0.8 mm, usually distinctly emarginate but only slightly so in oblong squamae. Carpels without styles and with broad stigmas laterally placed. Flowering period: (November) December-March. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Biennial, rarely perennial herb. Stems 0.4 m high when flowering. Leaves fleshy; in a rosette; blade narrowly linear-ovate to ovate, 20-70 x 10-20 mm, apex acute, often drying up from apex, dorsiventrally compressed, glabrous to sparsely hairy, marginal cilia present, green to brown, often tinged red or with red spots. Flowers: in a spike-like thyrse, dichasia sessile, bracts glabrous; 5-merous; anthers brown to black; calyx lobes acute; corolla tubular, lobes oblong, ± 3 mm long, each with a terminal, rounded, dorsal appendage, fleshy, petal apex spreading towards centre of flower; Nov.-Mar. Diagnostic description

The subspecies capitella and nodulosa are usually distinguished in southern African material by the large dorsal appendage on the corolla lobes in terminal position, a character not easily observed in shrivelled dried material. Plants of subsp. capitella are distinguished from those of var. nodulosa by the glabrous bracts subtending the sessile dichasia, and the emarginate squamae found in specimens from the eastern parts of its distribution area.An extreme form with very much flattened leaves is found west of Port Elizabeth. Depauperate plants of this form tend to retain their juvenile character of 4-ranked leaves, but they soon outgrow that stage in cultivation.Somewhat different are plants from north-east of Port Elizabeth which sometimes have almost terete leaves, but again a range of intermediates is found nearby. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Habitat

Growing on dry slopes rarely associated with rock outcrops. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Dry Grassland; Dwarf Karroid Shrubland; Zastron Moist Grassland. Grassland, dry slopes. From: Retief, E; Meyer, NL. 2017. Crassulaceae. In: E Retief & NL Meyer (eds), Plants of the Free State: Inventory and identification guide. Strelitzia 38: 473-484. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Distribution

Found in the southern Orange Free State and adjoining northern and eastern Cape Province to near Ladismith in the south-west. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
