PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / ERICALES / ERICACEAE / ERICOIDEAE / ERICEAE / ERICA / VISCARIA / LONGIFOLIA
Erect shrub up to 90 cm (3 ft). Branches virgate or spreading, puberulous, glabrescent. Leaves 6-nate, 8-20mm long and from 0.7-1.0 mm wide, mostly erect and imbricate, sometimes spreading, rarely squarrose, linear-trigonous, acute, mostly glabrous, occasionally pubescent, rigid. Flowers axillary; peduncles 2-6 mm long, pubescent; bracts approximate or subapproximate, foliaceous, 1/2-3/4 as long as the sepals. Sepals 6-10mm long, linear to linear-subulate, foliaceous, dry or viscid, glabrous or pubescent. Corolla 1.2-2.2 cm long, tubular or clavate-tubular, asymmetrically inflated, more rarely subequal, sometimes curved, contracted or widened at the mouth, pubescent or villous, usually more or less viscid, variously coloured, white, red, yellow, green, pink, orange and yellow, reddish-brown or pink and white; lobes erect, short, obtuse. Anthers included, 1-2 mm long, lateral, oblong, blunt, rarely semiovate and acute, muticous; pore about 1/3 the length of the cell. Ovary ovoid or turbinate, villous, mostly glabrous towards the base, style exserted; stigma capitate. From: Baker, HA; Oliver, EGH. 1967. Ericas in southern Africa. Purnell, Cape Town. [All rights reserved] As: Erica longifolia F.A.Bauer
Corolla ±12-20 mm long, tubular, non-viscid, hairy or pustulate, red, pink, purple, white, yellowish or green or, in some cases, bicoloured- pink with a white mouth or red with a yellow mouth; sepals, bract and bracteoles long, linear-lanceolate. This is the most variable subspecies, which it may, on more detailed population studies coupled with molecular analyses, be possible to divide into more subspecific taxa. All plants appear to be single-stemmed reseeders. There are problems in distinguishing material of the pink/purple-flowered form in the Bredasdorp District from similarly coloured forms of E. vestita. It is very possible that the two species hybridize where they are sympatric. The flowers of E. viscaria subsp. longifolia have a longitudinally ridged corolla and do not possess the longer, soft hairs of E. vestita. From: Oliver, EGH; Oliver, IM. 2002. The genus Erica (Ericaceae) in southern Africa: taxonomic notes 1. Bothalia 32(1): 37-61. [CC BY]
Erect, 1-3 ft. high; branches virgate or spreading; leaves 6-nate, mostly erect and imbricate, sometimes spreading, rarely squarrose, linear, acute, mostly glabrous, rigid, 4-10 lin. long, from 1/3 to over 1/2 lin. wide; pedicels 1-3 lin. long; bracts linear, approximate or subapproximate, from 1/2 to 3/4 the length of the sepals; sepals linear or linear-subulate, foliaceous, dry or viscid, glabrous or pubescent, 3-5 lin. long; corolla tubular or clavate-tubular, asymmetrically inflated, more rarely subequal, contracted or widened at the mouth, pubescent or villous, usually more or less viscid, variously coloured, 6-11 lin. long; anthers included, lateral, oblong, blunt, rarely semi-ovate and acute, muticous, 1/2-1 lin. long; ovary ovoid or turbinate, villous with long hairs, mostly glabrous towards the base. From: Guthrie, F; Bolus, H. 1909. Ericaceae: I. Erica. In: WT Thiselton-Dyer (ed.), Vacciniaceae to Gentianeae. Fl. Cap. (Harvey) 4: 4-315. Lovell Reeve & Co., London. Longifolius - with long leaves. Flowering at various times during the year depending on the locality. On account of the variation much subdivision has taken place in the past. In Flora Capensis five separate varieties were recognized. Most of these overlap in characters and run into each other and it is therefore considered not worth retaining most of them. In the case of var. maritima there are good grounds for retaining it as a variety. The length of the leaves is a variable character. Generally they are long but not shimmering as in E. vestita. Occasionally they can be quite short, only 8 mm long, which may mislead one into thinking that it is not E. longifolia. One of the attractions of E. longifolia is the great variety of colour forms that occur. Only a few of these are shown on the plate. Others that occur are red, brown, yellow-green, pink, orange and yellow, and purple. This species is easily recognized from its relatively long, narrow and crowded leaves which are not versatile or loose and from the narrow leaflike bracts and sepals. This latter character distinguishes E. longifolia from the closely related E. onosmaeflora Salisb. in which the sepals are wide and have a long linear tip narrowing gradually upwards.
