Geophyte, 80-250 mm high. Bulb globose, 10-20 mm in diameter, solitary; tunic multilayered, outer layers dark brown, spongy; inner cataphyll translucent white, adhering to leaf bases, apex obtuse. Leaves 2, very rarely 1, broadly ovate, 25-90 x 25-140 mm, spreading to suberect, upper surface light to bright green or glaucous, plain or with small to large green or brown pustules and/or spots, lower leaf surface light green, flushed with light to dark maroon, depressed longitudinal grooves prominent; leaf bases clasping, 10-20 mm long, light green flushed with maroon, subterranean; margins coriaceous, dark maroon; primary seedling leaf flat, prostrate. Inflorescence spicate, many-flowered, fairly dense, sturdy; sterile apex short; scape erect to suberect, 30-90 mm long, light green, plain or with maroon speckles; rachis light green, plain or mottled with maroon, apex light electric blue; lower bracts broadly ovate, becoming lanceolate above, 1-6 x 2-4 mm, magenta. Perianth zygomorphic, urceolate, spreading to suberect; tube cup-shaped, 3 mm long, light blue to almost white; outer tepals ovate, 8-9 x 4-5 mm, light blue at base, often fading to white above, apical gibbosities magenta, brownish-mauve or greenish-brown; inner tepals obovate, 9-10 x 5-6 mm, translucent white, apices mauve to magenta, recurved, upper two tepals overlapping, lower tepal longer and narrower, canaliculate. Stamens included, declinate; filaments white, 8-9 mm long. Ovary ellipsoid, 3-4 x 2 mm, light yellowish-green; style included, declinate, 7-8 mm long, white. Capsule ellipsoid, 10 x 6 mm. Mostly associated with granite hill and mountain slopes that have gravelly-clay or sandy soil, being found less frequently on dunes and quartz flats, in full sun or light shade, in rock crevices and shallow pockets of granite boulders, or in seepage areas.
