Crassula pubescens Thunb. subsp. pubescens
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Plants with erect or spreading branches, rarely with a basal rosette, not rooting at nodes, internodes 0-10(-20) mm long and often visible between leaves. Leaves oblanceolate, oblong-elliptic or linear-oblanceolate, (6-)15-25 x (2-)4-12(-15) mm, pubescent to puberulous, rarely tomentose. Inflorescence a rounded to almost flat-topped thyrse (i.e. part-inflorescences are produced by 1.2(3) nodes of central axis); peduncle with (1)2 or 3(4) bracts without flowers in their axils. Corolla: lobes with dorsal appendage elongate-elliptic, 0.8-1 mm long and about twice as long as broad. Flowering period: September-October (November). From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Diagnostic description

A large range of variation in respect of size, shape and pubescence of leaves as well as habit has been recorded within and between populations. The leaves vary from pubescent to tomentose in the eastern parts of the Little Karoo, whereas they are puberulous south of the Outeniqua and Langeberg Mountains. In the dryer parts of the eastern Little Karoo plants with shrubby habit may be found next to plants with a basal rosette and scarcely elongated branches. A plant with tufted habit has been recorded from near Calvinia, the northernmost point in the distribution, but in this plant the habit does not change under cultivation as in the above form with basal rosettes. In spite of all the variation subsp. pubescens is always distinguished from the other two subspecies by the elongate-elliptic appendage of the corolla lobes. Plants of subsp. pubescens are usually more delicate than those of C. atropurpurea var. rubella, which often grows near the former, but it is difficult to distinguish on vegetative material alone. Once they are flowering the beak-like apices of the corolla lobes of the latter are quite distinct. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Habitat

Growing on rocky slopes or often in rock crevices, usually on a south-facing aspect or in sheltered somewhat shaded localities. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]

Distribution

Found in the Cape Province from near Worcester, mainly in the Little Karoo but also in the adjoining mountains, to Willowmore, with the Gouritz River valley as its eastern limit. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
