Medium sized or sometimes small, probably perennial terrestrial. Rhizoids very numerous, capillary, simple, a few cm long, 0.1-0.2 mm thick. Stolons few, capillary, branched, several cm long, 0.2-0.3 mm thick. Leaves few on the stolons, petiolate, the lamina obovate, 0.5-2 mm wide, 1-nerved; total length up to 3 cm. Traps numerous on the rhizoids, stolons and leaf petioles, ovoid, stalked, 0.4-0.8 mm long, the mouth terminal with a rounded or truncate, dorsal appendage, the appendage inner surface with sessile glands and the margin fringed with a few stipitate glands, the ventral lip of the mouth receding and with radiating rows of sessile glands. Inflorescence erect or twining, solitary, simple or branched above, 4-50 cm long; peduncle terete or slightly angular, 0.3-2 mm thick, glabrous. Scales numerous, similar to the bracts, but ± smooth. Bracts ovate, with apex acute, 0.8-1.5 mm long, papillose. Bracteoles linear, with apex acute, as long as or longer than the bract, papillose. Flowers 1-25 or more, the raceme axis variably elongated or contracted, straight or flexuous; pedicels erect, terete, shorter than the bract. Calyx lobes subequal, transversely elliptic, with apex emarginate or shortly tridentate, up to 2 mm long, externally papillose, the margin strongly involute. Corolla 5-15 mm long, usually violet or mauve with a yellow blotch at the base of the lower lip, sometimes wholly yellow, often incompletely expanded, usually persistent in fruit; upper lip constricted below the middle, the inferior part broadly truncate-deltoid, the superior part broadly ovate, with the apex truncate, retuse or emarginate; lower lip limb approximately circular, with a prominent 2-lobed swelling at the base and with the apex rounded, entire or obscurely tricrenate; palate margin ciliate; spur subulate, with apex acute, curved or ± straight, c. 1 1/2 times as long as the lower lip. Filaments curved, 0.7-1 mm long, the anther thecae distinct. Ovary globose; style very short; stigma lower lip semicircular, the upper lip much smaller, ligulate. Capsule globose, 1.5-2 mm long, the wall thick and firm in texture, laterally minutely papillose, dorsally and ventrally smooth, dehiscing by longitudinal ventral and dorsal, marginally thickened slits. Seeds obovoid to narrowly truncate-obconical, angular, c. 0.25 mm long. Flowering in all but the wettest months. From: Taylor, PG. 1989. The genus Utricularia- a taxonomic monograph.
