The Sites and Species pages are resources for site managers, researchers and bird enthusiasts who are interested in wetland sites and bird species. Here, you will be able to select a particular wetland site or bird species, to find useful information structured into easy to navigate tables. Whether you're looking to monitor bird populations or assess wetland health, these webpages are a valuable tool for anyone invested in wetland and waterbird conservation.
BIRDIE has information about more than 700 wetland sites in South Africa. The sites are regularly monitored by the Coordinated Waterbird Counts (CWAC). CWAC is an initiative that has been ongoing since 1992 where observers count the numbers of waterbirds at certain wetland sites twice each year. On the Sites page you can select an individual wetland site to show descriptive information about the site, a map of its location, info about the wetland types and a comprehensive list of all the bird species recorded. You can also find the Waterbird Conservation Value for the site, which is an overall measure of how important a wetland is for the population of waterbirds.
BIRDIE has information about more than 140 waterbird species in South Africa. Bird data is drawn from two valuable citizen science projects that collect information on the distribution and abundance of waterbirds. On the Species page you can select an individual bird species to show descriptive information about the species, a comprehensive list of all the wetland sites where it has been recorded and how its abundance is changing over time. You can also find graphs of the total estimated population size of the species for each province (at recorded sites).
Welcome to Biodiversity Advisor 2.0!
Biodiversity Advisor, developed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and its Data Partners, is a system that will provide integrated biodiversity information to a wide range of users who will have access to geospatial data, plant and animal species distribution data, ecosystem-level data, literature, images and metadata.
The integrated information comes from our much-loved Botanical Database of Southern Africa (BODATSA) also known as Plants of Southern Africa (POSA), Zoological Database of Southern Africa (ZODATSA), Biodiversity Geographic Information System (BGIS), SANBI's institutional repository (Opus) and others.
The system is still under development, so you may find a few bugs/issues. If you do, please report it via the error reporting button available in various sections of the website or provide us with any useful feedback you may have via the ‘Give us feedback’ option available in the sidebar menu. You can create a free account for yourself by clicking on the user profile icon which will take you through to the login page. Here you can choose the ‘Create an account’ option or simply fill in your details if you have an account already. Having an account on Biodiversity Advisor will provide users with free access to biodiversity resources.
In future, Team SANBI will be able to log in using their day-to-day login details, BGIS users will be able to use their existing accounts and details, and general users will be able to log in using their LinkedIn profile, but for now you will need to create an account.
